Abu Ghraib, October 20, 2002
Shortly after state-run Iraqi television announced that President
Saddam Hussein was giving amnesty to all inmates in Iraqi jails, friends
and relatives of inmates converged on the Abu Ghraib prison. Clapping,
singing and praising Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, thousands overran
guards and pushed inside.
In this yard, a crowd of about one thousand pushed inside and ran
wild. Fifteen minutes of complete chaos ensued, with people climbing
on walls and buildings, even throwing rocks at guards and starting
fires. Warning shots from pistols and automatic rifles stopped the
crowd from going deeper into the prison compound. Finally, guards
brandishing clubs and pieces of wood were able to regain control and
move the massive crowd back.
