Abu Ghraib, October 20, 2002 Shortly after state-run Iraqi television announced that President Saddam Hussein was giving amnesty to all inmates in Iraqi jails, friends and relatives of inmates converged on the Abu Ghraib prison. Clapping, singing and praising Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, thousands overran guards and pushed inside. Adding to the chaos at the Abu Ghraib prison was a military helicopter that hovered above. Many thought Hussein was in the helicopter, and they waved and cheered each time it went by. Virtually everyone at the prison was chanting and singing songs of praise for the Iraqi president.
