Abu Ghraib, October 20, 2002
Shortly after state-run Iraqi television announced that President
Saddam Hussein was giving amnesty to all inmates in Iraqi jails, friends
and relatives of inmates converged on the Abu Ghraib prison. Clapping,
singing and praising Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, thousands overran
guards and pushed inside.
Inmates were carrying their possessions when they came out—everything
from bags of personal belongings to televisions and refrigerators.

Iraqis jailed for almost any crime, including crimes against the state
and political crimes, were granted "complete, comprehensive and
final amnesty" by Hussein. Credit: Nathan Mauger
